ISABEL MARANT was born in 1967 in Paris to a German mother and French father. Rejecting the girlish style popular in her suburban Paris neighborhood of Neuilly-sur-Seine, she asked her father for a sewing machine at the age of 15 and begun reworking old army jackets and remnants into a more bohemian wardrobe.
She took up design at Studio Bercot fashion school in 1985 and created, four years later, a small collection of outsize jewelry bearing her own name. Isabel established her own brand in 1994, setting up a studio in the Marais. Her first show was gel a year later int he debris-strewn courtyard of a squat, with her friends as models.
She opened her first store in 1998, in a former artist’s studio in the Bastille district. Press described her style as ” a layered, often floor-lenght silhouette with Asian and African influence.”
Isabel openend her first stateside boutique in 2010 in New York Soho and has expand her network of boutiques abroad since.
