The Crossover Setting

Kwame Alexander captures Josh’s voice and the power of basketball in a way that comes alive for my students. They love the rhythm and pulsing movement, the attitude and sass in Josh’s words. The book isn’t entirely blank verse, as you can see from the above. It is a combination of several different styles and types, but what they all have in common is Josh’s voice. His voice which is so real, vulnerable, confused, cocky, angry, Trade Tesla resentful, giddy, and everything that is perfect 13 year old boy. Josh is a star basketball player, twin to another star basketball player, son of a former basketball Olympian and a middle school assistant principal, and an eighth grader. Through each poem that tells of the few months of Josh’s 8th grade basketball season, the reader is given a clear picture of Josh and every detail of his life, thoughts, and feelings.

The Disney film Wreck-It Ralph features many video game character cameo appearances. Another cartoon crossover would occur in 1990, Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue.

She suggests he look into the Air Force or the Marines. Josh starts to tell her the truth, but then a pipe bursts in the girls’ bathroom.

Though most common on shows of the same production company (see, for example, “Hurricane Saturday”), crossovers have also occurred because shows share the same distributor or television network. A notable example of this kind of link is that between Murder, She Wrote and Magnum, P.I. These shows were made by different companies, but owned by Universal Studios and broadcast on CBS. Another case is that of Mad About You and Friends, which share the character of Ursula Buffay. Neither show shares any production or distribution commonality, but rather an actress , a setting and a schedule (Friends initially followed Mad About You on NBC’s Thursday night schedule). Following the cancellation of the ABC soap opera One Life to Live and its high rated finale, several characters crossed over into the network’s remaining soap opera General Hospital, remaining in the same timeline as their former show. Roger Zelazny’s novel A Night in the Lonesome October combines Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper and the Cthulhu Mythos, although he never specifically identifies them as such (“The Count”, “The Good Doctor”, “Jack”, etc.).

I would recommend this to anyone who likes poetry and to anyone who likes stories where you form connections with characters. Kwame Alexander’s The Crossover won both the Newberry and Coretta Scott King Awards for children’s literature in 2014. Combining beautiful prose with poetry that jumps off the page, Alexander tells the story of twin thirteen year basketball players Jordan and Josh Bell in a manner that makes reading fun for middle grade kids. Using basketball as a metaphor for life, Alexander imparts life lessons to adolescents in a non threatening way that has teachers reaching for his books. Critical reception for The Crossover has been positive. The Crossover, which received praise from poets and fiction writers alike, won the 2015 Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Award Honor. Joyce Sidman, a former Newbery Award winner for poetry, called it a “masterful mixture of rhythm and heart.” Its rhythm and character are apparent.

The Crossover Study Guide

Poetry is hard, at least for me, yet Alexander, like all great athletes and writers, makes the three-point shots look easy. You will want to know more about the characters’ Jesse Lauriston Livermore lives, but you will also put down the book with a satisfied sigh, knowing the ending was perfection. It’s a quick read, even for a slow reader like me.

The Oscars are a plum seven years younger than the Newbery . Now that I’ve looked at the most recent winner, next month I’ll examine the very first winner – Hendrik Willem Van Loon’s nonfiction history text, The Story of Mankind. In contrast, Roll of Thunder, Hear where does the crossover take place My Cry chooses the overt development of its theme. It barely lets a page go by without hammering in some new example of why racism is bad, but family unity is the strongest force there is. The way that the father’s death is handled bothers me particularly.

But The Crossover doesn’t offer enough to make a sentence. It’s not that there are conflicting messages in the story.

In this sense, even though his playing career is over, his stardom or lack thereof seems more complicated than Josh makes it out to be. The way that Josh introduces these letters shows that they’re a shock to the boys; this in turn suggests that Josh and JB never suspected that their dad had any medical issues. By introducing this revelation that Dad does have medical issues, and specifically, that those issues kept him from playing basketball, it impresses upon the boys that their success isn’t guaranteed. Instead, they’ll need to make decisions to care for their health so they can succeed. JB slides it onto his finger and ignores Josh, who tries to look like he wants a turn. JB finds more articles about Dad’s time in a European league. Then, JB finds a manila envelope with “private” on the front.

Official Crossovers

The satirical crossover—ranging in length from a cameo to a full comedy sketch or episode—is an extremely popular way of circumventing this problem. By various means, such crossovers typically avoid outcry from fans by being obvious parody or homage. However, on rare occasion, the humor of such crossovers can be used by one show make a narrative point by capitalizing on the audience’s Trade Mercer experience of the other programme. In its simplest and most common form, a television crossover involves a starring character on a parent show appearing on a spin-off or vice versa because of established character relationships. An obvious example of this type of crossover occurred when Cliff Huxtable of The Cosby Show visited his daughter, Denise, on A Different World.

Some students at Washington Episcopal School said I should write a book about soccer and then they invited me to their Futsal tournament and I went and I was hooked, and so I decided to write BOOKED! Also, I hated reading when I was ten, so I wanted to write about that .

Though she’s played Diggle’s wife, Lyla, for the past seven seasons on Arrow, Anderson will now be suiting up as Harbinger in the crossover. Canonically, the character has worked as the Monitor’s ally, assisting him in identifying and grooming both villains and heroes to combat the upcoming Crisis. In addition to Routh’s cameo as Superman from Superman Returns, quite a few other Arrowverse actors will be taking on new roles.

The poetry is spare and tight, and the text is visually lively. There were many things going on in this terrific story, between the family interactions, the brothers growing older and a little apart with the stresses of new relationships and maturing. I love how the text’s appearance reinforced the boys’ movements and feelings, and the action in general. Definitely a book that I will recommend to my middle school students. I loved the format of the book, and the relationships that formed between characters. While the book had basketball weaved in, it wasn’t overwhelming or all about the sport. In years past I’ve noticed that many of the books honored at the ALA Youth Media Awards aren’t always books that my students will immediately gravitate to.

The emphasis that Josh places on reaching the championships again shows that Josh prioritizes basketball success over all else. His mention of Dad shows how seriously he takes Dad’s teachings and past as a basketball star; he understands that both things help him in the present. JB passes the ball back to Josh, who performs a skillful crossover. When Josh doesn’t root his habit of narrating to himself in family history, it suggests that he does enjoy his individuality when he’s able to deploy it to control how someone else thinks of him. and wants to go to Duke, while JB’s head is shaved and he wants to play at the University of North Carolina.

Heartwarming and I could easily recommend to reluctant readers that are more interested in sports than books. This is really reading outside my normal subject matter. where does the crossover take place This is a Newbery book and a Kwame book so I gave it a try. I have no understanding of a crossover and what it is, but it seems to be a special move in basketball.

As it progresses and he grows, he must cross over towards adulthood, taking Dad’s teachings with him. Dad’s obituary in the paper offers the highlights of his career and says he died at age 39. Josh feels unmoored at the funeral without any rules or basketball rituals. At home afterwards, Josh takes a phone call from Miss Sweet Tea. She apologizes and invites him to attend a college basketball game with her and JB. As he gets close to Dad’s record of 50 in a row, he thinks he hears Dad’s voice.

Later in the movie, Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny were shown parachuting together (to keep things from getting too iffy legally, Mickey and Bugs’ lines were written so that each of them said exactly the same number of words in the movie).
